Wikipedia’s Destroying Itself With New Cascading Protection

Wikipedia is aware of the fact that it’s Main Page is the most spammed page on Wikipedia. With this new “cascading protection” fewature protecting the main page is as easy as checking a checkbox. But won’t this eliminate the point of Wikipedai being able to be edited by anyone?
Developed by Andrew Garret this new protection system is aimed at saving Wikipedia Admins hours and hours of work.  It was first ried out on the MediaWiki software to begin with and it worked like magic.

So what exactly does Cascading Protection mean?  According to the Wikipedia page:

Cascading protection operates as follows: If a page is protected using the feature, any pages included in it will also be protected for as long as they remain included in it. This protection should take effect instantly and automatically even if templates are included dynamically by a mechanism such as that used by the Main Page. Administrators can enable cascading protection by means of a checkbox on the usual protection form.

But is this as good as it sounds? What I mean is that sometimes when a Wikipedia page does make it to the front page it may have some grave error. When a user finds and attempts to correct it nothing happens. Eliminating the whole of Wikipedia being an open edit source of information and misleading the thousands perhaps millions of users who visit that page from the main page.
