Saddam Hussein has been killed and what did you do about it? Or a better question would be, what did you write about it? Current event traffic is the best traffic there is from search engines it’s quick and it’ll keep purring in until at least a month has passed. Now what does you the SEO webmaster do about this do you try to take advantage of it or just ignore because it’s not on the subject of your blog?

I did an experiment with the Youtube row between the Brazilian supermodel and her video which keeps being uploaded by Youtube users in defiance of Brazil. Yes, I did it on this blog and its working quite well to this day I am still getting hundreds of search engine visits, here’s the top 5 traffic bringers:

The post titled “Why Youtube Will Always Be in The Courtroom” had almost nothing to do with the dispute with Youtube and the Brazilian super model yet search engine traffic is still coming in. So how do you go about writing a great current event search engine traffic bait? In these easy five steps:

Stay Relevant

The first step is to find a way to stay relevant to your content not straying too far from what your target demographic is. Most about anything can be incorporated into a blog post if you are creative enough. For example the title of my post was relevant to what a regular seo news blog reader might expect:

Keep It Keywords A Minimum

Meaning keep the words you include your keywords in at a minimum this way it won;t be too obvious. A good rule of thumb is to use each keyword only once or if you have to twice. Here’s what I wrote:

Youtube made the news again when it was sued this time by Brazilian super model Daniela Cicarelli who is the ex-wife of the soccer player Ronaldo.

A short and general sentence that conveys the point without being too obvious. This is what the users will be searching for; nothing but the pure basics.
Supporting Keywords are a Must

meaning don’t just use your keywords and leave at that, be sure to get some supporting keywords that are related to your bait. A good idea is to begin a sentence with one of the main keywords then including a supporting keyword at the end of that sentence. Example:

Youtube has a motto… copyright infringement lawsuits will always be a problem.

Notice the use of lawsuits to go with the Youtube mention. This is a goo thing as most search engines use clustering to group keywords together.

That should be it. The secret to true current event search engine traffic bait is not to over think everything. The users that search for current events use the most general keywords from the story they have just read about or heard about.
