There are talks between the cellphone giant Orange and Google of a custom made cellphone just for Google. Which is rumored to come out in 2008.
Orange executives flew to Silicon Valley in California from Britain for a meeting at the Google Headquarters for a joint deal between the two giants. These two present leaders in their own file with Orange leading the cell phone industry and Google leading the search engine world.

So what will the said cell phone look like? Well they are talking about a joint brand with the Google logo as well as the Orange logo. It’s being manufactured by HTC, a Taiwanese firm which specializes in PDAs and smart phones, which leads me to believe it may have a screen like the iPod video.

It will of course run on google software which will dramatically make it faster and, as we’ve come to expect from anything google, will have top new technology. This however may cause a problem as Google really has never coded anything to this level for cellphones. The Observer reports that a source close to Google in the talks said:

Google are software experts and are doing some amazing work compressing data so that the mobile user gets a much better experience. They don’t know so much about mobiles, but they are eager to learn from Orange’s years of experience.

With google already offering services like sms it’s going to be easier to find local hot spots such as restaurant, theaters, and more. Google already had a partnership with Vodaphone to offer broadband.
With the cell phone industry moving more and more towards the Internet Google is trying to capitalize on this and jump ahead of the Industry as we all know it loves to do. This deal however could be somewhat of a challenge for Google. As I am sure Orange will want a cut of the profits from the SERPs and Google will want a cut in airtime earnings from Orange. All the same let’s wait and watch closely, because if this deal does go through we’ll have a new way to identify geeks everywhere by looking at their cell phones for the google logo. I know I’ll grab one as soon as I can.
