Google Pimps Out Search Appliance

Google just announced a host of new features for their Google Search Appliance, or the custom google search engine for companies.

New features include:

  • Results Hit Clustering. Which is groups of dynamically formed sub-categories based on the search query. For example if someone searches for “customer” a set of company customized categories will be at the top of the serps like “customer support” or “customer contacts”.
  • Source Biasing. Which will allow for assigning various weights of certain results. For example if you wanted some Documentum servers to be listed in results before others. Also for document type by giving more weight to .pdf formats they’ll appear before say .txt files.
  • Better sitemap support. This feature will allow for a better export of files to sitemap format or .xml.as well as open source connectors for indexing content in SharePoint 2003 and SharePoint 2007.

That’s about it for the new updates. This si great news for many corporations that use the Google Search Appliance as the weight and sitemap feature will help greatly increase the probability of the user finding what they want.

Thank you
