eBay just bought StumbleUpon.com

eBay North America’s president, Bill Cobb, just announced that they aquired StumbleUpon.com. He said that:

StumbleUpon offers a unique finding experience that introduces people to interesting and relevant web content that has been recommended by others in the community with similar interests. StumbleUpon is a great way to explore the Internet when you’re not sure what you are looking for, or when you want to make discoveries around your particular interests.

As many of you know, StumbleUpon is a website for people that don’t know what to do with their free time and just want to surf the web pointlessly. Using the toolbar or even from StumbleUpon.com people can “stumble” websites that are noted as “interesting” from other users in the network.

The Stumbler network generates a lot of buzz and brings quite a lot of visitors. In some of our experiments we got about 23 friends of ours to “sumble thumbs up” for our website and we got immediate traffic. More than 1,000 visitors got on the website in a matter of few hours, but the traffic died as quickly as it came. The StumbleUpon algorithm seems to work on the percentage of people voting for one website for a specific amount of traffic. When you receive a lot of thumbs up for short period, you’re ranked as “hit page” and you are awarded with a lots of traffic. If this new visitors don’t like your website or simply don’t vote “thumbs up” for it, your priority is decreased and the traffic stops. On average for interesting article/photo/video or similar you can get few thousand hits and on the other hand for less interesting page you can’t get more than 100-500 visitors.

It is really interesting to know why eBay is interested in StumbleUpon as they can not be used for commercial needs. We tried to abuse Stumble-Upon so many times, but it proved to be quite pointless as this network doesn’t generate any sales leads just and stumblers don’t even bother to click on ads or anything else. The Stumblers are only looking for fun on the Internet and nothing else, so what is eBay going to do with that network?

We sow some comments on Webmasterworld.com saying that people believe eBay is only interested in getting their hands on the stumbler community and mostly on the extremely popular stumbleupon toolbar. This toolbar is installed on all Stumbler computers we suppose eBay will try to make some spy thingy to monitor user activity in order to mine data on what stumblers are interested in and spam them up with highly targeted offers. Other suspect that eBay might try again to get into Search after the failure of their previous search engine Magellan. In any case we will see when the times comes and better not speculate with it.

The battle between eBay and Google for Product Search is increasing with every passing day as Google Products is getting more and more popularity and the merchants participating in their network are growing like mushrooms after rain. eBay on the other hand is still keeping strong positions but nevertheless loosing money from the decrease of traffic and buyers that are going with Google instead of them. I’m not sure if StumbleUpon is going to help eBay with their problem and might even end up as a worthless investment, but its eBay who makes the decisions.

Online Success - Coolest Gadgets.com

A new success story each week! After I started the Top Paying Keywords every week I noticed something is missing. That’s the reason why I decided to open this category for all non-believers that you can indeed make money online.

I have decided to open the new category Online Success Stories with a great website. The site in question is Coolest Gadgets and according to its owner makes more than 10 000 USD per month from Adsense only.

The owner of the blog (yes it’s based on WP which makes it sort of a blog) Al Carlton spends his entire day browsing the web for gadgets. If you want to have the website’s history as well as read Mr. Carlton’s advices you can visit his blog here .

Congratulations to Al Carlton and I will be waiting for his next $100k project which I am sure will come along in the next 6 months if not sooner. You can also read the full thread on Digitalpoint.

There are many ways to generate money online (and I don’t mean the $5-10 per month) and this is one of them – the most important thing according to me is communication with your visitors and persistency – if you are going to write one post each day, keep it that way. Don’t stop for weeks and then post 10 new ones in a day.

Google buys FeedBurner for 100 Million US Dollars!

Google buys Feedfurner for 100 million dollars

Wow! Officials just confirmed that Google is trying to make a deal with FeedBurner.com to buy it for the small sum of $100,000,000.00. The information we have is that the deal is now under a binding term sheet and will close in 2-3 weeks, and there is nothing that can really derail it at this point. That’s one of the greatest buys Google did this year after acquiring Performics. This event was somehow predictable but more like a big joke when we heard that Google bought a SEO company. We had that discussion that when Google gets SEO Experts into their team, they would most definitely like to get their hands on Feedburner as they are the largest RSS Distribution network on the planet and using their statistics Google can track down which blogs are dead and which ones are alive.

Currently we have no evidence for the intentions of Google will be using Feedburner data to change/alter its rankings but we assume that in some point they will try to use it and eventually websites with large number of users will benefit out of it. That was a predictable step after Google declared war on paid links and now having feedburner’s data on blog readerships, Google will be able to determine which blogs are dead and made only with the sole purpose of increasing/manipulating the search quality by adding website reviews made up only for the search engines. To my knowledge there are so many blogs that are selling posts and have few to none visitors other than search engine spiders, but have relatively high page-rank.

The price itself seems quite high and unrealistic. Feedburner has only 422,000 publishers and this does not seem to be worth the $100 million investment, but that 422,000 publishers actually translates into access to many millions of readers that Google can push their advertising to. Also I assume that Google is looking at the rapid increase of readers and publishers and that’s the main reason why its willing to invest such crazy amount of money.

We will give you more information as soon as we get it. This is hot topic and we will investigate as much as we can.

Monetize your website like never before using AuctionAds Top-Tier Affiliate Marketing Program

Monetize your website like never before using AuctionAds Top-Tier Affiliate Marketing ProgramThe thing I hate most about affiliate marketing is that its very slow and sometimes miserable process. For example I used to be big affiliate for Adidas using the BeFree network, but it was really not the best thing I ever experienced. The main problem was that I was supposed to used static (I don’t mean animated but one product/service only) banners or text links and each time they change their product line or make a new promotion I had to change everything manually on all websites and this simply sux! Yep I couldn’t take it and I gave up.
Fortunately for all of us, Text-Link-Ads came out with a new product/service targeted at affiliate marketers like me. This affiliate network is extremely similar to the Google AdSense as it is keyword targeted, but has some really nice flexibilities that the big G does not want us to use:

  • You can choose your own products from all products in the network and even select your own ebay userid or favorite store. This gives you the advantage to choose what to put instead of hoping that the mighty G will know you your website is all about
  • You can place AuctionAds advertisements wherever you want and as many as you want. Currently there is no restrictions on that (heh I haven’t red the TOS but I assume so :-)
  • AuctionAds is wonderful solution that works perfectly in addition to AdSense. In fact, visitor think that you’re actually selling all those things and its a great cover-up for MFA website or addition to your blog.

I want to share also something else with you that I did recently and I got really impresses and motivated me to write this post.

I have a website dedicated to the sport of Freestyle Wrestling and its a really big website with more than 400 professionally written articles. This website became authority for a lot of wrestling keywords and is ranked top 10 for most of the thing I bothered to help it rank well. The average daily visits are about 500-1000 and they are mostly interested in the news that I post there.

The first type of monetizing that I tried with this website was total failure. I put AdSense, but nobody bothered to click on the ads. Not that the location of the ads was bad, but the website was so stuffed with content that nobody bothered to click the ads and instead continue reading more articles. This trend ended up with extremely poor conversion rates with about 1.26% CTR which is very very low.

Then somebody gave the the great idea to put a page called “wrestling gear” on the same website so that people interested in such things can click there and see a page stuffed with wrestling gear AdSense. Yes that helped me increase the CTR to 5.6% which is still quite low as most wrestling store advertisers pay as much as $0.04 cents per click. I desperately needed some good solution to increase the magnetization of this website!

Two weeks ago I received this promotion newsletter from Text-Link-Ads for their new program called AuctionAds and from curiosity I signed up and started testing. I’m always a bit scared of introducing drastically new publisher networks so I decided to test-drive this new ads on my wrestling news website as I don’t have anything to loose there. The first day I got really nice CTR of 12% to 15% which was a ground breaking record for that particular website. The unfortunate thing was that affiliate publishing does not count clicks but only actual sales and that sucked a bit because the first day I didn’t get any money and I was about to give it up.

The funny thing was that when I checked the stats two days later I found out that the first day I sale, but the way ebay works is that I receive the fund few ways later and that was awesome! It is so good! Now I get average $1.4 to $1.6 per click! Yes I measure my success in clicks as an average of all the money earned from affiliate sales divided by the number of clicks. This is quite a big increase compared the the previous $0.04 PPC from AdSense.

I guess this example should try to give you a good idea of how you can monetize your website by adding simple “online shop” page to your website and placing some AuctionAds or similar Affiliate Program.

I fall in love with AuctionAds because its so simple to use and it saves me so much time from bothering to apply to each merchant individually. I strongly suggest that you give it a try. Their website is www.AuctionAds.com.

To Sign Up with them please Use this link here AuctionAds so I can have some benefit out of reffering them new clients :-)

Google goes after MFA sites with AdSense Arbitrage

The last few days the webmasters world is rocked with a massive wave of AdSense Bans - numerous publisher accounts are banned for using AdSense Arbitrage. You can read on most webmaster forums that people receive email with warning that their accounts will be closed on some specific date, but at least they are going to receive all the money earned, not like the regular type of bans that they just close your account and you loose all the available funds.

First lets make clear what Arbitrage really is. Arbitrage is the act of reselling traffic and this is actively used by all major players and its accepted as a respectful business model. Also it is well known that Google, Ask, MSN and others do buy traffic and resell it on their websites and is totally legal.

The situation is thatGoogle is going after website that are not converting well for the advertiser. They are using AdWords data to determine which AdSense Publishers are returning bad/low ROI (Return of Investment) for their advertisers and then take that data to battle the MFA (Made for AdSense) websites. This basically means that if your website is only made to go for only for advertisement clicks and has no good content then the CTR (Click Thru Rate) will be quite big, which clearly marks your website as MFA. In such case the AdWords advertisers are paying for all the traffic which is not that concentrated to buy and as effect their ROI will be lower for your website.

This new action is trying to decrease the number of clickthru websites that are not really passing buyers but instead only viewers. This is a way to improve the quality of AdWords and make it better program and make it more advertiser friendly and that’s exactly done by increasing the ROI.
Now lets say few words on how to protect yourself from receiving the “you will be banned” letter:

First. If you’re buying traffic from AdWords then STOP! or at least decrease it so that you don’t pop out with your website. Don’t think they can not find you. Running some simple analytics they can easily identify your website and get you caught! Be smart on that one!

Second. Lower the number of AdSense ads that you have on your website. Make sure you don’t have more than 2 ad units. You can combine other types of ad publishing networks and still keep your good CTR, but in the same time be under the Google radar.

Third. Try adding some quality to your website. Posting good articles always works well and can help you rank better on the Search Engines with organic listings. I know that low content websites have better CTR but I don’t think its worth it to get banned!

I suppose that if you follow those directions the chances of your website being caught and banned are quite low and you don’t have anything to fear from. Also be advised that they are banning only websites that “resell” the traffic not websites that buy it!

P.S. I forgot to mention that In the post below about Paid links vs MFA Website I did judge a bit harsh Google for not going after MFAs and now this really proves that they are doing their best to improve quality weather we like it or not. I’ll blog about this situation later.

Google - Paid Links vs MFA Websites and the story about Search Quality

Last saturday our buddy buddy Matt Cutts posted more information on Google’s war on Paid Links and this time he discussed the Link Quality of Paid Links in Web Directories and WordPress Theme Sponsorships which are really hard to digest topics for professional webmasters and SEO’s.

The story begins with Matt’s opinion on Web Directory Quality and how web directories should be sorted our which one is good or bad and therefore G will/should be able to threat links in different ways. See the quite I got from his blog:

Q: Hey, as long as we’re talking about directories, can you talk about the role of directories, some of whom charge for a reviewer to evaluate them?
A: I’ll try to give a few rules of thumb to think about when looking at a directory. When considering submitting to a directory, I’d ask questions like:
- Does the directory reject urls? If every url passes a review, the directory gets closer to just a list of links or a free-for-all link site.
- What is the quality of urls in the directory? Suppose a site rejects 25% of submissions, but the urls that are accepted/listed are still quite low-quality or spammy. That doesn’t speak well to the quality of the directory.
- If there is a fee, what’s the purpose of the fee? For a high-quality directory, the fee is primarily for the time/effort for someone to do a genuine evaluation of a url or site.

Those are a few factors I’d consider. If you put on your user hat and ask “Does this seem like a high-quality directory to me?” you can usually get a pretty good sense as well, or ask a few friends for their take on a particular directory.

I’m not really sure what to think now. Does that mean that most of the web directories that link to MFA and other “low quality” websites will be discarded and be labeled as “potential junk” and their links will be discarded including the links to good websites??? All directories have a piece of this and that and that’s the way it is! In general terms young websites are always a bit low quality, but that’s normal right? In the beginning new web owners don’t really know what they’re doing but sooner or later they will get the hang of it and start producing better quality? Does that mean that from now on directories should accept only highly developed good quality websites and thus prevent hundreds even thousands of Newbies to have their website shared?

Lets say that at least in one way this will “prevent” the minor sort of spam that few links will cause to the Big G, but lets turn our heads to another really important case — PAID LINKS.

Paid links in general are and should be accepted as a form of advertising and is receiving as bonus some nice PageRank and thus receives/should be ranked higher in search engines (at least that’s how it was ’till now). The questions that I tried to raise on Matt Mullenweg’s blog where he commented the Sponsored Wordpress Themes was the following:

Hello All, I couldn’t resist and post my own opinion on the paid links since I do find a lot of since in them. Paid links is what it is - a form of advertising - even thou not really “major” type but still one of the largest and quickly growing on the Internet. And I’m underlining INTERNET because that’s how people advertise - Banners, Text Link and stuff like that which is totally organic. The whole thing about “spamming the search engines” is a side-effect and in our case a good side effect. Most people (99.99%) that are buying this sort of links have “high” or at least “good” quality websites because if you don’t have a good product what’s the reason to waist money in advertising it right??

Also on the wordpress sponsorships — if you don’t want to “loose your link-juice” don’t get sponsored theme. What is the big deal? There are still people that make “free” themes .. yeah .. that’s true .. they are not as good as the “sponsored” ones but that’s they have their own price!!I do support all WP theme designer with the request with CCL not to remove the sponsored links since that’s how those people earn absolutely honestly their bread! Its work and sometimes it takes few days to make a good theme and that’s just like all other professions! Do you work and sell your products for money? Yes? Is the “customer” the one who decides which product he/she should get?? Yes??Thanks for letting me share my thoughts! Cheers and have a great day/evening!

As you can see I did show my points in the wordpress themes issue and I will support it with whatever I can because that’s a real “customer” situation where nobody pushed “anyone” to get the “sponsored theme” but if he’s so worried that there will be some minor leakage of PR than get the crappy regular themes .. that it right?

Now the situation is getting so frustrating and the Google Search Quality Team is pushing their limits to get “quality search index” but is that the real situation?

I’m not a business major and I admit it. I’m a dumb Computer Science Major that doesn’t know almost anything about business but I can certainly (with my very own knowledge) derive the simple conclusion that: WHO PAYS GOOGLE’S SALARIES? ADSENSE?. Let me rephrase that now with few more words — Is it true or false that MFA websites ( if you don’t know that MFA stands for its short for Manufactured For AdSense) are forming about 50% (that’s at least) of the total AdSence income which basically goes for the GoogleGuy’s salary? Right? And Matt Cutts is saying that our little issue with Paid Links is bothering them so much that our websites are ranking higher than what????????????????? THE MFA SITES????

To my simple knowledge or call it personal experience, most of the websites that we all promote via paid links or other sorts of links are pointing to relatively high quality websites that we own or at least we promote. Those websites sell services or products and are totally legit (or not all but most). In this case I’d say that a big majority of those websites are NOT ADSENSE PUBLISHERS or at least have only a small portion of their income from advertisements. And what really gets me annoyed here is that Google is trying to kill our business??

Yes, Matt Cutts did say:

Q: Suppose I didn’t want to read all the comments on this post. Did you post any other nuggets that I should be aware of?
A: Hmm. Well, someone did mention AdSense spam and so I reiterated how to report MFA or AdSense spam. I’ll quote that for folks that are interested:

If you see a spammy or made-for-AdSense site, do the following:
- Click on the “Ads by Google” link.
- At the bottom of the page, click on the “Send Google your thoughts on the site or the ads you just saw” link and fill out the form.
- When you fill out the form, at the bottom you’ll get to a section that says “Add additional information here:”. Include the word “spamreport” all in one word to make sure that the webspam team can see the feedback.

I don’t want any Google user to encounter spam, so please feel free to use Google’s authenticated spam report form for any other type of spam. We can also handle authenticated spam reports in several different languages.

WoW! The Google Search Quality team is so concerned about search quality that they have to say “Hmm..” before they state their oppinion on MFA sites!

Now people, please share your opinions on this and I hope, You Know Who, reads my blog!

Cheers and don’t spam the Google Index! Ha ha ha ha ha …

Microsoft buys Yahoo?

MsYahoo?Recently the rumor that Microsoft had offered $50 BIL for Yahoo was confirmed. The initial idea for partnership between the two giants was transformed into monopoly and this shocks the webmasters world! What is going to happen now? Is that their way of answering the Google Monopoly threat? What is going to be the new look of MsYahoo?

Since the beginning of the Microsoft Dynasty MSN was trying to expand as much as possible and conquer new territories and users. The MSN/HOTMAIL paid services (including ISP) brought a lot of money to Microsoft, but nobody noticed any large increase in quality. The MSN/LIVE search engines, as always, are displaying old and sometimes irrelevant information and all SEO’s know that they are easiest to fool around with so spam is a constant issue for MS.

On the other hand Yahoo somehow managed to build up a very nice portal and that is really amazing. About 40% of the people I know love to digg into the Yahoo pages and the search is getting very popular especially after the fact that Yahoo is the only search engine that shows 100% of the backlinks for a particular web page (or closer to that) and therefore its a very nice tool for SEO when estimating the competition. Yahoo also got some nice money from advertising and also quite a lot from its Directory which now costs $260 annually and that’s for simply listing your website there.

The latest trends in Search lead me to think that MSN/Live definitely need something new and Yahoo is answer to their prayers. I’m assuming that if they close this deal MSN will export Yahoo’s search algorithm and put it on Live so that Live can finally LIVE somehow less spammy! Also I suspect that Yahoo will be filled up with Microsoft advertisements and you will most probably see Windows VISTA ads all over it. So sad with that vista issue .. but I guess when they release Service Pack 1 and 2 they might really get it going… but that’s on another topic.

Overall we can’t do anything but sit and wait to see what the Giants will do. Now we can only speculate and bring up theories.

TLA SPACE: In this fast growing internet age, many work from home jobs are available for IT specialist. Still some one thinking of starting business has millions of available options. In this regard best option can be the establishment of a website hosting company. For this all you need is a reseller account from any bigger hosting company and then you can easily offer cheap hosting packages to your clients. The only hurdle in this sense can be the financial weakness. This problem can be solved by obtaining small business loans from financial institutions. Many people prefer to go for mortgage loans as they can get these loans with good packages of insurance like travel health insurance.
